A property tax audit is a process of collecting and verifying data related to the taxability, situs, and value of property for property tax purposes¹⁴. It may involve an inspection of the property and/or an examination of the ownership, occupancy, rental and accounting records of the taxpayer¹⁴.
A property tax audit can be conducted by the state or local tax authorities to ensure compliance with tax laws and to assess the accuracy and fairness of the property tax returns²⁴.
A property tax audit can also be conducted by an independent firm to help taxpayers identify tax saving opportunities and reduce their property tax liabilities²³.
